I’ve been excited for this wedding at Chambers Protestant Chapel in Boys Town, Nebraska for a very long time. The bride, Emily, and I are alums of the same small, Iowa college, and I couldn’t wait to see her marry her love, Matthew.
Longtime church friends, Em says she knew Matt was the one when they were spending time with her family, and it just felt normal, it was just right. For Matt, it was those nights spent talking ’til 4:00 AM; he’d never felt so comfortable with anyone. Em just put him at ease.

On their first “official” date, Matt managed to burn the chicken, filling the house with smoke by the time Emily arrived. It helped lighten the mood, and somehow the meal still turned out well.
Matt asked Emily to spend her life with him with dinner at their favorite Italian spot followed by a walk around her childhood lake. He thought of everything – flowers and a letter waiting under a gazebo, and an engagement celebration, complete with chocolate fountain, at his parent’s house!
The Wedding Day
When I arrived the boys of the family were sequestered upstairs catching some Hawkeye Football, and the basement turned bridal suite was bustling with ladies preparing for the festivities. Emily was calm, ready to get the day moving – time to get married!
Fall in Nebraska – need I say more? You never know what you’re gonna get, but a beautiful Indian Summer day graced the couple with its presence. Not too much wind, not too little, just enough for rustling leaves, and supermodel hair.
When Matt finally saw his bride, his love, admiration, and excitement were unmistakable. His smile said everything. It was so fun to watch him view Emily in awe, dance with her a bit, then see the slight confusion over all the layers of her dress.
This reception by the lake was a childhood dream of Emily’s, and what an incredible party it was. Emily thought of everything. Really. Every detail was so Emily – the stationery, her dress (Now, THAT is a party dress!), the hand-painted signs, and painted wine bottles. It was simple, it was beautiful and so fun to see Emily’s personality and touch throughout the day.
Emily + Matthew,
Thank you. Thank you for allowing me to share in your joy and celebration. For letting me witness your commitment to each other and your vows before God. I know I’ve said this many times, but I mean it sincerely – it was an honor to be at your wedding, an honor to meet your families. May you grow closer to our Savior and each other through your marriage.
