When you let the kids play, you end up with some of my favorite documentary family photography. Ever. Below are some of my all-time favorite documentary images. These are moments that wouldn’t have happened had I posed and directed the family through their session. I’m excited to share why I love them so much.
When You Let the Kids Play: Documentary Family Photography
Sneakin’ a Snack
Luke’s mom was packing up snacks for their flight the next day, and he kept sneaking into the kitchen to snag an extra bag of Teddy Grahams (I don’t blame you, Kid). Once he had acquired his treat, he would head right back to this stop, and of course, the dogs would follow. Luke loves his dogs, “Raffieeee” aka Ralphie and “Tooookeee aka “Töökie,” and it was hilarious to watch him try to decide whether or not to share.
There really isn’t a better word to describe Abigail other than “Spitfire.” The only sister with three brothers, she is sweet, sassy, genuine and joyful. She follows her brothers anywhere and loves to curl up with her eldest brother to read. When I arrived at Abigail’s home for her family session, she immediately showed me her sparkly shoes and provided a house tour (I’m not sure it was optional…????).
All About the Sausage Pancakes
Annaliese is a big fan of cooking in the playhouse in the backyard. Sausage pancakes, sausage pie, sausage, and sausage tea are always on the menu. Oh, and don’t forget your work glasses for such important kitchen duties. Annaliese wasn’t super comfortable around me when we first met, and while we aren’t best friends, I love watching her be herself. She’s definitely comfortable in her own skin.
