Guest Post: Why I Chose a Documentary Lifestyle Newborn Session

I can talk and talk and share and show you why small moments matter, why your real life really is beautiful, and why these are the moments that you will cherish for years to come. All of those things are true, but I want you to hear from a real mom doing real life with her real family – the good, the bad, the messy, the ugly, the simple beauty of every day life. Read on to hear why Dawn + Taylor chose a documentary lifestyle newborn session for her family.

If you want to see their sessions (Yes, I said ‘sessions!’ They chose to capture the first year of Grace’s life in 3, 6, 9-month and 1-year sessions!), click here.

Guest Post: Why I Chose a Documentary Lifestyle Newborn Session

What drew you to documentary/lifestyle photography?

We liked that lifestyle photography captures real emotion. We had also seen Laura’s work with other newborn sessions and really liked what we saw! Having the photos taken in our home was a really special piece for us as well.

If you were nervous about your first documentary/lifestyle session, what made you nervous? How did you get over those nerves?

I was so nervous before our first session because our house was a DISASTER after just having a baby. But we just had to do the best we could to make things look tidy, and Laura really was able to shoot around almost everything I was worried about; so it didn’t end up being a big deal after all!

I was also nervous about Grace’s schedule and meeting her needs in the middle of our session. But Laura assured us before our session that Grace was the first priority. She didn’t mind hanging out while I nursed Grace or changed her diaper or rocked her (in fact, she even snagged some photos with my permission).

How much preparation did your session require?

Our session didn’t really require much prep time. We tried to tidy up our house a little bit, but other than having a couple outfits picked out, that was it.

What did you enjoy most about your session?

We most enjoyed that our session felt like we were just hanging out with a friend rather than posing for photos.

Why was it important to do a documentary/lifestyle session for your family?

It was important for us to do a lifestyle session because we wanted to capture snapshots of our life exactly how we wanted to remember it. We wanted to remember Grace doing her own thing in her own setting, what our house was like, and everything about this time of life. We really wanted to capture the special moments with Grace as a newborn in our home.

What would you say to encourage a family to do this kind of session?

This style of session is low stress, genuine, and fun. It’s okay if not everyone’s eyes are open or someone isn’t smiling, because Laura captures the personalities of everyone really well.

And lastly from Taylor, “Laura is a shining star.” Thank you, Sir!
